One of our most luxurious brands here at Charli & Kate, we fell head over heels for the Oribe collection and were fascinated with the story of how these high performing products came to adorn our shelves.
Oribe (pronounced Or-bay) Hair Care began its journey in 2008. For co-founders Daniel Kaner and Tevya Finger, it was time to create a pivot in the market, and the perfect collaborator was discovered in Oribe Canales. So, who is Oribe Canales and how did he influence a collection that sparks deep connections with its consumers?
It all started in the late 70's & 80's when this one time “bad boy” from Cuba with movie star good looks would burst onto the scene and become part of the hair world’s most iconic milestones. It can be said that in the 80's Oribe brought back not only the wig (after the one and only Diana Ross taught him how to secure one properly), but also styling with rollers and wild, gorgeous colour work.
Then in 1997 after years of editorials and fashion show styling, Oribe’s focus turned to celebrities - and one in particular- Jennifer Lopez (Jenny from the block). J’Lo tracked Oribe down after many years of reading his name in fashion magazines. On a photo shoot in Miami for her first album cover ‘On the 6’ Oribe lightened her hair and pulled it tightly over a wig into a long ponytail. It was a done deal—Sean Combs (yes Puff daddy himself), her boyfriend at the time, told Lopez not to let Oribe get away, and she didn’t (we wouldn’t have either.) Over the next two decades he continued to create red carpet looks, music video and runway hair not only for J-Lo but for Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum and Miley Cyrus just to name a few!
Fast forward to 2008, Oribe took his 30- year heritage of hairdressing, successful career and love for glamour and individual beauty into a collection of groundbreaking haircare. Blending technology, hand-craftsmanship, high performance, luxury and the finest ingredients. This now multi-award winning collection continues to push the boundaries and prides itself on performance. It is proudly gluten-free, cruelty-free, colour and keratin treatment safe and have UV protection for hair. Oribe Canales wanted stylists and consumers to not just see, but also feel the difference, sadly in December 2018 he passed away but his legacy will live on through his haircare. They say Oribe is for the hair obsessed, so you can call us here at Charli & Kate obsessed because we can never get enough of the magic that is Oribe.
